College of Human Sciences to celebrate graduating seniors at spring convocation 2020

The Iowa State University College of Human Sciences will celebrate the accomplishments of graduating seniors in a virtual event, available on demand beginning at 1 p.m. CST on Friday, May 8, at hs.iastate.edu/isu-graduation-chs-convocation.

Laura Dunn Jolly, dean and Dean’s Chair, and other academic leaders will individually recognize students receiving bachelor’s degrees at the College of Human Sciences Convocation.

Six graduating seniors — Sia Turner in child, adult, and family services; Brooke Vogel in dietetics; Taylor Barnard in event management; Jadin Hennings in elementary education; Tammie Melton in apparel, merchandising, and design; and Hannah Van Roekel in athletic training — will receive special honors at the College of Human Sciences event.

Sia Turner of Des Moines, Iowa, has been named university marshal. Turner is graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in child, adult, and family services, with minors in Spanish, Latino studies, and psychology. Turner served as the co-president and treasurer of the Network Against Human Trafficking. She was also involved in Admissions Outreach Ambassadors and the Connect Four multicultural learning community. Turner studied abroad in Costa Rica and in Spain. She taught English classes and ran after school programs in Ecuador during the summer of 2019. Turner also successfully urged Ames City Council members to sign an ordinance to help protect the Ames community against sex trafficking. After graduation, Turner will return to Des Moines to work as                                                      a community schools coordinator before applying for the Peace Corps.

Brooke Vogel of Normal, Illinois, was named the college marshal. Vogel is graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics. She leaves a large impact on the College of Human Sciences and Iowa State University. Vogel has showcased her leadership by providing information for prospective students, working as both a student admission representative and a student recruitment ambassador. Participating in multiple research efforts and serving as a teaching assistant, Vogel showed determination not only in her studies, but by helping others learn and grow. Vogel plans to attend the University of Iowa in the fall to pursue a master’s degree in clinical nutrition, and become a clinical dietitian or work in research.

Taylor Barnard of Bloomington, Illinois, has been named the College of Human Sciences Graduating Student of the Semester, by the CHS Student Council. Barnard is graduating summa cum laude with bachelor’s degrees in event management and financial counseling and planning, with minors in hospitality management and political science. Barnard has recruited students as a CHS student ambassador, promoted study abroad as a CHS STARTers senior ambassador, and led the National Honor Society in Family and Consumer Sciences ISU chapter, Phi Upsilon Omicron, as president. After college, Barnard plans to continue helping young adults plan their future.

 

Jadin Hennings of Dysart, Iowa, has been honored with the Dean’s Recognition Award. Hennings is graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and endorsements in mathematics and reading. Hennings made the dean’s list every semester at Iowa State, and was a deeply involved student. She worked hard to fulfill her goal of making a positive impact on as many children as possible, mentoring her peers in the Future Teachers-Future Leaders learning community and tutoring youngsters through America Reads America Counts. Hennings also traveled to Camp Adventure Child and Youth Services in Japan, where she worked closely with U.S. military children and taught them how to swim. Hennings aims to find a teaching position around Ames.

Tammie Melton of Manhattan, Kansas, has received the Dean’s Recognition Award. Melton is graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in apparel, merchandising, and design as well as in marketing with an emphasis in merchandising. Melton has demonstrated dedication and drive in academics and preparation for her future through work in the Honors program as a teaching assistant, and wide-ranging roles in student organizations, such as social media director for both TREND magazine and The Fashion Show, marketing and public relations director of the ISU chapter of the National Retail Federation Student Association, and a fundraiser for Dance Marathon. After college, Melton plans to work in marketing at Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco.

Hannah Van Roekel of Wellman, Iowa, has received the Dean’s Recognition Award. She is graduating summa cum laude with a degree in athletic training. Van Roekel has become an exceptional athletic trainer, working with several Iowa State athletic teams and assisting with athletes’ injury prevention and rehabilitation . For her Honors program capstone project, Van Roekel created a research-based exercise program targeting bone health for adults with intellectual disabilities. She led the Fellowship of Athletic Training Club as president, and served students in the ISU Academic Success Center as a tutor. Van Roekel leaves Iowa State with certifications in blood borne pathogen training and professional CPR rescue. She plans to attend the University of Iowa this summer to                                                       begin doctoral studies in physical therapy.

In related events, the university-wide virtual commencement ceremonies for undergraduates, graduates, and veterinary medicine graduates will be available on-demand beginning at 10 a.m. CST on Saturday, May 9, at graduation.iastate.edu.
